It's Biodiversity Day!

Image
It's Biodiversity Day! Also known as International Day for Biological Diversity, Biodiversity Day encourages us to learn more about biodiversity issues around us and in biodiverse hotspots.  This year's theme is "Building a Shared Future for All Life." You can learn more about the theme here !  Due to some work I've been caught up with, I was not able to write a full post for today but I did want to drop by a really interesting article by National Geographic that was published in 2018 . I found some really fascinating points among this article, especially:  Indigenous people protect 80% of global biodiversity Quote from Kelly Swing: '“The fact that the Amazon ecosystems are as rich as they are today is proof of how successful these cultures have been, in living in balance with their environment.”' "...many leaders hope to clarify that the global biodiversity goals be met not only with traditional protected areas like parks—which have conservation as ...

Happy Earth Day! & Why You REALLY Need To Start Caring About Earth 🌎

Image
Happy Earth Day! It actually took me a while to think about what to write for this post (almost four months since the last one - talk about writer's block), and that's not because there's not enough to talk about. There's definitely a lot to write about, and I think it's depressing we need a day to celebrate the Earth when there could be the possibility of honoring the Earth everyday through sustainable practices.  Nonetheless, I appreciate that many take this day to pledge themselves to protect Earth in their own ways! Instead of restating the classic tips, such as the five R's or these amazing ways to make a difference stated on earthday.org's website , I thought I could provide some facts for why people say that Earth Day should be everyday.  Before moving into the facts, I'd also like to add that the theme for Earth Day 2022 is "Invest in Our Planet." As earthday.org says, "It's the only home we have. We need everyone, while there ...

Happy New Year! & Five Animal-Related Must Reads to Look Back On This Year

Image
Happy New Year! It's December 31st and almost 2022, and I hope you're as excited as I am to move forward into the new year. Though 2021 was definitely not the best year (and as Dave Barry describes it, 2021 was "marginally better than 2020 ") this post will take a look at five must-reads for the animal-related news that came out this year.   1) "Bears, baboons, tigers are getting COVID vaccines at zoos across the U.S." - National Geographic (August 20th, 2021) This is a great read to understand the animal side of the pandemic and how they are being affected, especially considering that zoo animals like lions have died from COVID-19. The article goes into the vaccine rollout for the COVID vaccines, and why pets aren't getting vaccinated like zoo animals are. If you're concerned more on the pet side of things, I'll give you the big takeaway: your pet doesn't really need a COVID vaccine because it isn't exposed to people as much as zoo ani...

3 YEARS of The Bookish Elephant + Looking Back at my Favorite Posts!

Image
I can't believe it's been three years of creating content on this website! Starting up this website was definitely not easy, but I'm so glad to see how far I've come. This post reflects back on The Bookish Elephant - bringing you the best moments and updates over these past few years. Without further ado:   Updates I've been tweaking this website for a while now, from adding little bits of HTML to create added features on the website to changing the theme of the website altogether! Here are some of my favorite updates: 1) Adding a Picture Perfect page! In case you haven't viewed this page, you can find it here . As someone who dabbles in photography, this was the perfect way for me to start. I loved taking photos from places I traveled or walks I went on, and the page accumulated to the photos you see today!  2) Changing the About the Website Page! The About the Website page was so fun to create and I had a great time making fun buttons to help navigate and rea...

Celebrate with Me: It's International Tiger Day! - Animal of the Week (Week #9)

Image
Happy International Tiger Day! I'm practically screaming in this post for my joy for these beautiful tigers. There are so many types of animals out there, but I love how this one is an international holiday because it shows that it truly means something to not only a specific country or nation but to everyone! Terrific, majestic, and beautiful are just some of the many words I can use to describe tigers, and because of this, I wanted to dedicate an animal of the week to them. So here it is: on this special day celebrating tigers, here is a post that talks about five interesting facts on tigers! Also, stay tuned for the end where I discuss a call to action on ways you can help tigers.  1) 3,900 Left - According to WWF , there are only 3,900 tigers remaining. It's no surprise that tigers are endangered, but their numbers are increasing in some areas. Specifically, in the countries of Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, and Russia, we are seeing increased conservation efforts having am...
