Happy New Year! It's December 31st and almost 2022, and I hope you're as excited as I am to move forward into the new year. Though 2021 was definitely not the best year (and as Dave Barry describes it, 2021 was "marginally better than 2020") this post will take a look at five must-reads for the animal-related news that came out this year.
1) "Bears, baboons, tigers are getting COVID vaccines at zoos across the U.S." - National Geographic (August 20th, 2021)
This is a great read to understand the animal side of the pandemic and how they are being affected, especially considering that
zoo animals like lions have died from COVID-19. The article goes into the vaccine rollout for the COVID vaccines, and why pets aren't getting vaccinated like zoo animals are.
If you're concerned more on the pet side of things, I'll give you the big takeaway: your pet doesn't really need a COVID vaccine because it isn't exposed to people as much as zoo animals are. On top of this, if your pet does get exposed to COVID-19 there is low chances of it contracting an illness, and even lower chances of it getting severe symptoms. The
CDC updated an article on this about a month back, but since our understanding of COVID is changing daily I recommend keeping your pets away while isolating if you think you were exposed to COVID-19.
2) "Rainforest Home to Elephants, Other Endangered Species Taken Off World Heritage in Danger List" - Newsweek (July 22nd, 2021)
This Newsweek article was a concise read on Africa's largest tropical rainforest reserve being removed from UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)'s list of threatened sites. The news was noteworthy considering the animals that live there, including bonobos, the bush elephant, and the Congo peacock. Newsweek also reported that there are some parts of this forest that most likely have never been touched by humans - amazing news considering the amount of land that we have destroyed.
3) "Giant pandas are no longer endangered, thanks to conservation efforts, China says" - CNN (July 9th, 2021)
Yup, giant pandas have now moved from the "endangered" status to "vulnerable", and it's due to the conservation efforts and the stands that people took for giant pandas in China. If you follow giant pandas you might remember the IUCN taking them off of the endangered species list back in 2016. However, Chinese officials disagreed at the time, stating that greater achievement in conservation efforts were needed to change their conservation status. Now, China says that they are no longer endangered.
It's important to note, however, that this doesn't mean we can stop worrying about their populations. As
this National Geographic article points out, deforestation and habitat fragmentation as well as other natural barriers of population growth can affect them in the future. It's important we continue to support their growth before they fall back into the endangered status.
4) "Queen Elizabeth Signs New Law Increasing Animal Cruelty Sentences In England & Wales From 6 Months To 5 Years In Prison" - World Animal News (April 29th, 2021)
According to the article, over 70% of people supported tougher prison sentences for animal abusers. The Parliament member Chris Loder originally brought forward the law, and his tweet below represents the excitement of this news:
5) "African elephant species now Endangered and Critically Endangered - IUCN Red List" - IUCN (March 25, 2021)
This was big news for everyone - African elephants were no longer one species classified as "vulnerable" but were now being assessed as two different species. I won't summarize anymore so you take the time to read it, because this was important news for African elephants.
That's it for this post! There were definitely more must-reads and important animal-related news I couldn't include in this article, so feel free to drop some below! Happy New Year once again, and I'll see you in 2022 :)
