Can Animals Get Coronavirus? - A Special and Welcome Back Post!

Hi everyone, and welcome back! It's been almost two months since the last post, which is certainly a long time! I've been taking a bit of a breather but here I am :)

First off a special announcement: biweekly posts are coming in! I've already scheduled a few and will be planning to continue writing lots of new material. Look out for animal posts, ways you can save the planet by simply sitting on your computer, and a special look into Earth Day!

I hope everyone is doing well during these tough times and inviting a positive look at quarantining. Baking recipes, binge-watching your favorite TV shows, etc. is all part of a fun experience to have at home, whether you're living alone or with friends and family. Look for a post later on ways you can get your animal on while at home as well!

After that long introduction: the question of whether animals can get coronavirus and if your pets are in danger to get COVID-19 has come up many times.

I was wondering the same question, and decided to do some research. So here it is...

(With lots of pictures to keep you entertained!)

My first thought to the answer of this question was: Doesn't it depend? Because really, after studying viruses for some time I remember that coronavirus was a family of viruses, causing things from the common cold to deadly diseases.

Covid-19, Virus, Coronavirus, Pandemic, Epidemic
The COVID-19 virus.

After looking at the trustable sources, this CDC article agrees:

"Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Some coronaviruses cause cold-like illnesses in people, while others cause illness in certain types of animals..."

Covid, Covid-2019, Covid-19, Coronavirus, Pattern, Tile

According to CDC, both SARS and MERS are some examples of animal-originating viruses. Yet, this virus seems to be out of trends. It came from a live animal market, but is now spreading from person to person through direct contact?

Even so:

"At this time, there is no evidence that companion animals, including pets, can spread COVID-19 or that they might be a source of infection in the United States."

Chemistry, Crown, Coronavirus, Cure, Disease, Epidemic

So, the straight answer is we don't know. We should still practice good hygiene around pets and treat them as infectious by washing our hands often when around them though.
