Our Favorite Party Poopers- Tarantulas; Animal of The Week (Week #8)
Hi there, and welcome back! As you probably guessed by the title, I'm back with a "Animal of the Week" post! I wasn't sure what to write about lately, so I decided to pull back one of the blog traditions.
I admit I was a bit scared to do this post because I have a thing with spiders. They're hairy with many eyes and... kind of sit there without you noticing. And while dogs may be the party animals at your next big party, other animals like spiders can come under the impression of being party poopers and appearing when they weren't invited.
Despite my fear, I decided to do a post on how tarantulas are actually pretty cool. If this post took a while, it's mainly because I very much disliked searching up pictures of spiders. (Though if you love spiders, that's totally cool! After this post I realized that they are absolutely amazing animals that I should definitely look into more :).
So here it is:
1) Big, Big, and Bigger- The Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula (you read that right) is the largest known spider on Earth, having a size of 30 centimeters (10 inches)! That's about 5 quarters in size, not counting leg span. (Source)
A hairy tarantula- don't look now but it blinked :) |
2) Name a food, I can eat it! - Well, that's not really true. But, tarantulas can eat a variety of organisms: insects, mice, birds, frogs, and even lizards! Mostly, though, they stick to other insects. (Source)
You don't know how long it took me to insert that photo!
3. Just Can't Get Rid of Me - Female tarantulas can live up to 30 years in the wild! That's a staggering number compared to all the other animal lifespans today. Male tarantulas, however, only live up to about 10 years in the wild. Go females! (Source)
I needed a break from all those spider pictures, so here is a picture of some fun bubbles for you to enjoy :)
4. Meow - Nope, tarantulas aren't cats, but they do have something many large cats do: retractable claws! I always found retractable claws a rather cool concept, so now knowing tarantulas have these extending claws made me a like them just a little bit! The reason for their claws? Taking a heavy fall for tarantulas can have fatal consequences. It's best that they don't take a fall at all, so by using retractable claws while climbing they minimize the chances of that happening. Pretty cool, huh? (Source)
That's it for this post! I hope you all enjoyed reading about tarantulas. I have to admit, after reading and researching about them through this post I learned so much and hope you all did too!
I know that there's been a lot going on in the world right now, and everything might seem a little crazy. But we can get through this! We need to be kind (especially to elephants, please, ideas like this one are wrong and are very upsetting and distressing to hear about. Animals are creatures, too! Respect them and their environments. It is cruel to treat anyone this way)!
Listen to others when they spill their opinions to you, and give them back something small. Watch out for a post soon about positivity towards others!
I know I usually sign off with a "stay tuned" but I created a little slogan that I thought would be perfect to remind everyone of kindness during these times. Here it is: Save the People & Animals Together. S.P.A.T.! This basically means to be mindful of not only ourselves and our health during tough times, but to be mindful of all the animals that are around us that may or may not be experiencing some difficulties. Try using this expression wherever you can, and I hope it means something special to you!
Stay safe and stay tuned! Until next time, S.P.A.T.!

- Help Save the Vaquitas!
- Vaquitas are critically endangered, with some scientists estimating only 10-15 left in the wild. This number is decreasing with the number of fishing accidents that happen, and we have to help! To learn more, read my post on vaquitas to gain insight and learn about websites that can help you contribute to their cause here.
