Special: Extreme Heat Sparks Extreme Animals

Hi, and welcome back! Summer has officially begun on the 21st of June, marking the Summer Solstice, and the weather sure shows for it! While the heat rises to unimaginable levels, pools, beaches, and surfboards are coming out a bit more this year.

One thing is for sure: while people often need to think up of tremendous ideas for new ways to cool down, many animals can survive this extreme heat. So, in this special post, I thought I'd share with you five animals that survive the most extreme heat. Let's jump right in!

1) Scorching Heat With Scorpions- If there's a desert, there's a scorpion! They can survive a year without food if necessary, which makes them excellent for surviving in a desert like habitat. They are great hunters in the desert, and if you have heard of them before, you probably know why they are so greatly feared- stingers.

2) Tiny Terrific Tardigrades- Also known as water bears (yes, bears in water) tardigrades can survive in the most extreme temperatures. Described as the toughest animals on earth, tardigrades are microscopic creatures with amazing powers, surviving at levels more than 140 degrees Celsius (or more than 300 degrees Fahrenheit). In fact, they can survive 10 years without food! Watch out for an Animal of the Week post on these awesome creatures!

3) Dauntless Desert Tortoises-  These tortoises are really dauntless- they show no sign of giving up. They can survive 50-80 years (which is about our life span) in hot places like the sizzling deserts. That's like humans living in what they live in- 140 degrees! That's some tortoise.

4) Pleasant Pompeii Worms- They survive in hydrothermal vents on the ocean's floor. Though the aren't topping the levels of the tardigrade, the worms do have a bacterial coating which acts as a protector for its cells- so they don't die in the 80 degrees Celsius (176 degrees Fahrenheit) these Pompeii worms can withstand.

5) Saharan Cheetah- The name says it all- these cheetahs can survive the hottest desert in the world: the Sahara Desert. In fact, they live their whole life there. However, their population is decreasing tremendously, and they are one of the species many don't know are on the critically endangered list. Protecting these animals are extremely important, not only for their awesome characteristics to run fast and survive extreme heat, but also because it is important that we don't let another animal go to never be seen again.

This isn't a picture of an actual Saharan Cheetah, since they are very rare. :)

I hope you enjoyed learning about five animals that can survive extreme heat! Keep cool this summer, and keep reading!
