Stupendous Sea Turtles - Animal of the Week (Week #4)
Hi, and welcome back! Many of you regular readers may have noticed some formatting has changed a bit, and this was due to some issues going on with blogger. Now they are all fixed thanks to this new theme, and the blog is back and running!
Today's animal of the week post is all about the endangered sea turtles, so let's dive right in!
Here are your five fun facts about these awesome animals!
1) Going Green- Some sea turtles will actually choose a vegetarian diet. The normal diet of a sea turtle consists of common aquatic animals, including jellyfish, mollusks, shrimp, snails, crabs, and even sponges. Yet, some choose to eat algae and sea grass. They are named after their diet- adult green turtles. (Source)
2) Quick... Hide! Contrary to the stereotypical belief that all turtles can hide in their shells, sea turtles can't. Their shell is connected to the spine, and is more like an exoskeleton. Actually, turtles are more vulnerable to becoming prey for a hungry predator this way (and to marine debris) (Source)
3) Warm vs. Cold- Scientists have found that the warmer the temperature of the egg becomes, the more chances the offspring is a female. Sea turtles hatchlings and their gender depends on climate- males occur in colder climate and females (as said previously) occur in warmer. If it is too warm, however, the egg dies. (Source)
4) Battling Even the First Few Moments of Life- Ever wonder why someone described watching a sea turtle's nest hatching to be quite an emotional experience? The offspring must has to make its way out of its nest, struggling and helpless, to the ocean waters. Crabs, driftwood, and other obstacles lie ahead of it. Yet it makes its journey, barely born. But sympathy isn't needed- these creatures need to make this journey for their survival. It is necessary in order for them to survive. (Source)
5) Need A Manicure?- Sea turtles used to be hard to track for scientists because tracking tags were harder to attach. To solve the problem, scientists used the same material (neoprene-silicone) used on fake fingernails to keep it on longer. (Source)
Thanks for reading about sea turtles! You can even see a local sea turtle hatching and experience watching the emotional but astounding hatch. Protect sea turtles, and spread the message whenever you can! They are an endangered species- and their word needs to get out.
