Happy Horses- Animal of the Week (Week #1)
Welcome back! For the first week's, "Animal of the Week" I decided the heartwarming, happy horse!
So here are your 5 interesting facts about horses. (I have given the source for each fact if you'd like to read more.) :
1) Horses can sleep standing up or lying down. The reason they can stand up while sleeping and we can't is because they don't need to go through the REM cycle as often as we do. REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, which help us keep memories and learn more later. When REM occurs, they lie down. They're pretty lucky, because while the other animals are looking for a place to sleep, they are busy sleeping standing up! (Source 1. Source 2. Source 3.)
2) Horses look out for one another while one is sleeping. You might have had a buddy system for the bathroom when you were younger, and horses use the same concept! When one horse is sleeping, the other is keeping a lookout for any dangers like predators or an upcoming storm. By looking out for each other they stay attentive, and can have a good night's rest. 3) Horses can drink 10-25 gallons of water a day! 10-25 gallons might not sound that bad, but considering we drink a 1/2 gallon of water everyday, horses must get thirsty a lot. (Source 1. Source 2. Source 3.)

4) Our eyes are nine times smaller than an average horse's. A horse has the largest eyes of any land animal. (Source)

5) Horses produce 10 gallons of saliva a day! That's almost enough to go with the water. 😉(Source)
Horses are so interesting! They are known for their beautiful manes and long backs, perfect to sit on for a long stroll when the sun sets. I hope you enjoyed learning about amazing horses, and stay tuned!
