Brilliant Black Panthers - Animal of the Week (Week #6)
Hi, and welcome back! I'm sure you've probably watched (if not heard) of the blockbuster film Black Panther, topping the box offices and becoming the 10th most grossing film in history. It's a tragic tale with all a classic story needs to have- love, hatred, rulers, and of course- a Marvel twist. But not many know that this tale is not completely fiction.
Black Panthers have been around for centuries, and they are one of the most interesting and (personally) terrifying animals that ever lived (Just try a Google Search for "Black Leopard" and you'll see what I mean). They are not only called black panthers, but have a variety of names, such as black leopards, black jaguars, and black cougars.
So this for this week's Animal of the Week post, let me introduce to you: The Black Panther!
So this for this week's Animal of the Week post, let me introduce to you: The Black Panther!
1) Spots, Spots, Spots- It might seem impossible to see anything but the dark, black skin of the black panther. So if I told you they not only have black jaguars, black leopards, and black cougars as variations of their names, but they also are black jaguars and black leopards, you might be shocked. But these animals really do have spots (called rosettes) that you cannot see because of the black color. Source
2) Fierce and Unpredictable- If they look like they are ready to pounce, they are. These big cats are said to actually be more aggressive than leopards, jaguars, and cougars, being more harder to control and less able to handle young. Source

3) Color Me Scary- Black Panthers can camouflage and look different from all other leopards, jaguars, and big cats with that awesome black coloring- but how do they have it and others don't? Black Panthers get that great black color from a pigment mutation which is known as melanism. You've probably heard of melanin, which makes our skin just the way it is! Source
4) And... Jump! - You wouldn't want this animal in your Physical Education classroom. They can jump and swim quite well. They have been spotted climbing high trees and jumping down to do a terrific pounce on their prey- and can jump 20 feet from their standing position. That's about jumping four times an average height! Dunking a basketball won't be hard with this guy around. Source
5) Heavy Eaters- Black Panthers can eat about anything- birds, reptiles, large mammals (Yikes!) but they manage to keep their weight in check. These creatures can weigh 100-250 pounds, which is pretty amazing for a seven-eight foot animal. Source
Those are your five fun facts about black panthers! I hope you enjoyed reading about these fierce- some creatures.
