The Mysteries Behind Black Holes- Special

Hi, and welcome back! Recently, the first ever photo of a black hole was taken by the Event Horizon Telescope, which came to as major news to the scientists at the International Telescope Team. So, I thought I would write an article about them. Enjoy!

For years, scientists have been trying to unravel the mysteries of the mind-boggling, and quite astounding, black holes. Black holes interest scientists for their unique gravitational abilities to suck in even the tiniest particles of light, and scientists recently became a step closer to solving these puzzles. On April 10th, a real picture of a black hole was announced and taken by the Event Horizon Telescope. The Event Horizon Telescope did not only record a picture for millions to see, but it made it possible for scientists to calculate the true mass of a black hole.

Before scientist could calculate the mass of this hole, they had to make estimations. Lisa Grossman wrote in The M87 black hole image showed the best way to measure black hole masses, “In 1978, the first mass...[estimated]… about 5 billion times the mass of the sun.” The sun’s mass alone is 1.989 × 10^30 kilograms, yet the black hole they estimated was 5,000,000,000 times larger than that alone. Lisa Grossman also explained in 2011, scientists tried estimating again, this time with more accurate results. These scientists predicted the mass of the black hole was 6.6 billion times the mass of the sun. Though these scientists were closer, they were still about a hundred million times off than the actual results.

How scientists found the mass after taking the image was quite simple for them. In Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, Einstein explained how the black hole’s shadow was directly related its mass. Since a black hole is invisible, in the above picture the diameter of the black circle would represent the mass of the black hole. Using this, scientists helped find the real mass of the M87 black holeー6.5 billion suns. Thanks to the Event Horizon Telescope, the many scientists who dedicated time to black holes,  and the International Telescope Team, scientists have found the mass of a black hole. In the end, it just goes to show humans that the universe is so much bigger than most think.
