Courageous Cheetahs- Animal of the Week (Week #2)
It's time for another, "Animal of The Week" post! This week, I decided to do the cunning, cute cheetah!
The cheetah is smart and fast, and is really interesting. Here are your 5 interesting facts about cheetahs.
1) Cheetahs can run up to 70 miles per hour! Cheetahs are known for running at high speeds, because of the way their body is structured. They have a flexible spine, enlarged lungs, and enlarged circulatory parts to keep the blood pumping! (Source 1. Source 2.)
2) Cheetahs can survive drinking only one drink for 3 to 4 days! Imagine running 7 times the amount you usually run, only to find you can't have water for another 3 days! Now that's truly amazing. (Source)
3) Their tail helps them run! Cheetahs actually use their tails to steer when running! Their tails are long and muscular, and help keep balance because of the cheetahs high speeds. (Source)
4) Cheetahs kill uniquely. There may seem like only one way to kill an animal, but cheetahs try biting the throat, making the prey suffocate until their death. One of the most common cheetah prey is the Thomson's Gazelle. (Source)
5) There are only about 7,100 cheetahs left on the planet. Sure, that number seems big now, but people are off for cheetahs silky coats and soft fur. As National Geographic describes it here, "The world's fastest land mammal is racing toward extinction..." We have to do whatever we can to protect these adorable creatures. Breaking the world record isn't just anything. It proves the cheetah has capability that needs to stay on Earth for many generations to come.
I hope you enjoyed learning about cheetahs! Cheetahs are close to extinction, and need to be protected. Spread the word, and help save these fast and furry friends! Comment down below what your favorite fact was, and here's a question for you to think about and answer in the comment box below: Can the gazelle can beat the cheetah? (I'll post the answer soon so don't cheat!!!) That's all for this week, I'll see you next time!
